New Point of Care Resource: Option Grid™ Decision Aids

You are here

Option Grid™ decision aids, published by EBSCO Health, are interactive, flexible and easy-to-read tools to help patients and clinicians compare treatment options based on the best available evidence.

The decision aids focus on the questions patients most frequently ask, helping to make preference-sensitive decisions and increasing patient knowledge. The decision aids help patients share what matters most to them, enhancing communication and empowering shared decision making. Option Grid decision aids have been co-developed with patients to ensure the patient voice is heard.

Clinicians can select several options to compare and, for select topics, risk information can be personalised to the patient's age, gender, or other relevant medical information.
Research indicates that Option Grid decision aids:

  • Facilitate shared decision making in clinical encounters
  • Appear to have minimal effect on encounter length
  • Lead to increases in patient knowledge

Current Option Grid topics include:

  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Hip osteoarthritis
  • Spinal narrowing (stenosis) of lower back
  • Herniated disk in lower back
  • Prostate cancer (localised, low-risk)
  • Atrial fibrillation stroke prevention
  • Enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hypertrophy)
  • Stable angina with blockage of a single artery
  • Lung cancer CT screening
  • Failure to progress in labour: Delivery options
  • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test
  • Hepatitis C treatment

Around two new topics are expected to be released each month.

Clinicians can share customised decision aids with patients electronically, by creating a PDF or sending a link, or by printing them during the consultation. Clinicians can also easily document the decision aid with a prepopulated EMR note, linking to the exact information provided to the patient.
